What is bone broth?
So in today's times, people don't tend to eat the entire animal. Bone broth dates back to prehistoric times, when people ate animal parts like bones, hooves, and knuckles into a broth they could drink. It sounds gross I know.
Why would we want this?
Bone broth is rich in minerals that help build and strengthen our bones. It also is difficult to get it in our regular diet. When was the last time ate knuckles or feet? By cooking down the bones, we can get healthy nutrients, including vitamins, amino acids, and essential fatty acids.
However, the nutrient content does depend on the types of bones you use, so using a variety is a good idea. Here's some of the many benefits to consuming bone broth...
1: It can improve digestion:
The gelatin in bone broth, more specifically an amino acid in the gelatin called Glutamine may be helpful for those with leaky gut, as well as irritable bowel disease. Leaky gut, which is associated with several chronic diseases, is when the barrier between your gut and the bloodstream is impaired, allowing things to escape into your bloodstream that should otherwise stay in the intestines. This can cause an immune response when your body sees these unknown substances as invaders.
2: It can fight inflammation:
The amino acid in bone broth -arginine, may be especially beneficial for fighting chronic inflammation.
Chronic inflammation may lead to a number of serious diseases including heart disease, diabetes, metabolic syndrome, Alzheimer’s disease, arthritis, and many types of cancer.
This is one of the reasons we should be eating anti-inflammatory foods.
3. Bone Broth Nutrients may protect your joints.
Collagen is the main protein found in bones, tendons, and ligaments.
During the cooking process, collagen from bones and connective tissue is broken down into another protein called gelatin.
Bone broth also contains glucosamine and chondroitin, which are natural compounds found in cartilage which can help decrease joint pain and lessen the symptoms of osteoarthritis.
4. Bone Broth is great when you are trying to lose weight as well because it's high in protein, keeping you full longer! If you're full, you are likely to have a lesser calorie intake, leading to weight loss.
5. It may also promote better sleep and brain function. The amino acid glycine, found in bone broth, may help you relax. Multiple studies have found that glycine helps promote sleep.
